RUBY DEE A PHENOMENAL WOMEN FOREVER

RUBY DEE – A PHENOMINAL WOMAN  (1922-2014)

The angels just took Maya Angelou home and now we hear another legendary, phenomenal woman has left the planet.   Ruby Dee died June 11, 2014 at the age of 91 from her home in New Rochelle, New York of natural causes.  Do you think Maya told Ruby to come home because the view is beautiful up in the heavens?  We will never know.  I’m sure her late husband/actor Ossie Davis who died at the age of 87 in 2005 will be waiting for her with open arms.  The two seemed inseparable as they stood side by side at many events and as civil rights activists.  They met in 1946 while acting in the stage play, JEB.  They were wed two years later.

Born Ruby Ann Wallace, October 27, 1922 in Cleveland, Ohio, this 5’2” powerhouse lived a full life as an actress, poet, screenwriter, activist, playwright and journalist.  She appeared in such movies as American Gangster (2007), Do The Right Thing (1989), A Raisin in the Sun (1961) and The Jackie Robinson Story (1950) to name a few.

If you’re wondering why her name was Ruby Dee, it’s because she was first married to blues singer, Frankie Dee.  They later divorced however; she kept his surname for professional reasons.  Three years later she met and married Ossie Davis.  They have a son and two daughters.

To those who had the chance to know Ruby personally and those who only knew her through many of her memorable performances will never forget the legacy of achievements she left behind for our children and our children’s children for years to come.
